New Balance at a glance.

New Balance is a Boston-based brand founded in 1906 by William J. Riley. The company was first called New Balance Arch Support Company, focused on manufacturing arch supports and other similar equipment to aid the foot and provide a secure fit.

It wasn’t until the 1960s where New Balance designed a sneaker. The Trackster is the brand’s first running shoe, it’s also the first running shoe to feature a ripple sole and feature varying widths to give you the best fit possible. This leveraged the brand and convinced them to manufacture sneakers. By 1970, New Balance officially became New Balance Athletics Shoe, inc. (Now New Balance Athletics, Inc.)

Beyond the jokes among the sneaker community hailing New Balance as “the epitome of dad shoes”, NB actually has pretty good footwear models. The legendary 990 series spearheaded the brand’s resurgence in running athletics. There are currently 5 990× models, where each remains popular due to the amount of tech it packs. Most of the models are also either “Made in US” or “Made in UK”.

The New Balance 99× series is also extremely popular due to the bulky and chunky build of the running models. These sneakers became trendy in the late 2010s as the “dad shoe” was the talk of the entire sneaker community.

New Balance seemed to master the art of vintage trainers. The New Balance 550, an old-school basketball trainer, was subject to a collab with New York’s Aime Leon Dore where the model became highly sought after due to its limited numbers. If you check StockX, the resell prices on these bangers have tripled since launch.

The brand returned to making basketball shoes these past few years, signing NBA stars like Kawhi Leonard for a signature shoe.

Don’t sleep on New Balance, they’re one of the best brands out there right now.
